Nov 12-13 with the Hive children being curious about birds

In the Hive class we go for a walk two times a week, well on our walk the children were asking Questions about the birds along the river trail.

“Is that a duck or a goose?”

“How do you know if it’s a girl or a boy?”

“Do those birds fly?”

“Do birds sleep?”

So much curiosity about these birds. Me and the other Educator ask the children How do you know if it’s a duck or goose?

As the children were conversing back and forth on how they thought it was a duck or goose this started a bit of a debate between the children.

Then they started talking about the girl duck or the boy duck. We then asked the question. “How did they know it was a girl duck or a boy duck?”

This also led to the question “Do bird sleep?”

some of the children said yes and some of the children said no this also came up is a debate.

This is what led me to ask how do you know they sleep?
This is part of some of the conversation that has been led on those two days this is why I’ve decided to do my pedagogical narration around this topic.

Not only are the children showing the interest around these birds but the Democratic practices around this deftly has sparked my intention the difference of the opinions throughout the children.

Their outlooks how they look at it their explanations around watching These birds as well as observing their actions and what they’re doing. Not only along the river trail but as we are at the park watching the trees noticing the birds it seems these creatures are all around us as one child has said.

This also as part of my pedagogical practices of walking alongside children As they navigate the world around us in their curiosity spark interest.

This is where it leads me to the contributed nation to the program I can’t wait to explore this topic with them and learn and grow alongside I also want to embrace the differences of opinions and different scenarios that we can come to a solution together.

One of the children’s solution around if birds sleep is that birds have nests they have eggs and they sit on the eggs slimmest sleep if they have a nest.

This is where I asked the child what you think a nest looks like?

why do you think they built a nest for the eggs?

How big do you think the nest has to be for them to be inside of it?

where did the birds build the nest?

These are some of the questions I asked the children I have decided to bring in twigs and grass for them to try and build their own nest as they didn’t know how to measure that I am also bringing in a book I have found from a thrift store with different types of birds as one child asked how many kind of birds there were.

I think that this topic is going to open up so many different perspectives and curiosities and I am excited to explore this

This leaves me curious: Do birds sleep? If they sleep, when do they sleep? Do birds dream?

If they don’t sleep, what do they do during the night?

Hello Michelle thank you so much for your feedback I appreciate it.. Those are some interesting questions I will have to bring some of these questions into the conversation with the children. I know right now were exploring birds nests as they’ve come to the conclusion birds to sleep because of the bird nests as that’s where they lay their babies so they must sleep inside the nests as they’re sitting on the baby eggs.. They also are very concerned for the birds this week as they’ve noticed a lot of trash garbage along the river trail so they’ve had lots of questions around that.. But of course I will come back to the original question and also bring in some of these questions.
