As I was going through some of the paintings that
the children had done, from the activity in the art gazebo, Me and my colleague
actually, noticed that the children all seem to pick the color red.
I had done this painting activity with open ended
materials for over a week, as this is what the children were asking for and
then noticed every day they wanted the color red.
In this activity for open ended painting, I had red,
orange and green for the colors for painting, I also had paintbrushes, straws, corks
and hammers for them to paint with.
Me and my colleague actually noticed that the
children all seem to pick the color red. I had done this painting activity with
open ended materials for over a week as this is what the children were asking
for and noticed every day they wanted the color red.
Until the very last day they then asked for the color blue!
This was quite a discovery; they wanted to know why I didn’t have the color blue on the
table?
I explained to them that there was no color blue left in the art room, then the children
proceeded to want to make the color blue the children tried mixing so many
different colors. They still can come up with the color blue. Some of them are
very disappointed by this; I then explain to them about the primary colors.
I wanted them to have the opportunity to explore mixing the colors and seeing if they
could actually get the color blue.
I also wanted the opportunity to explain to them
about primary colors as I felt this was important in this moment of what
primary colors are.
This is where I explain to them that blue is a
primary color it means it cannot be combined it with other pigments meaning
other colors but you could mix lighter colors in with blue you just can’t make
the color blue red yellow.
They then all started talking about all the colors
they could make they proceeded to mix the colors they did have at the table to
make other colors they quite enjoyed this I told them I would try the best I
could to get the color blue back again for them to use by asking to order
another bottle of it.
